2022 Winners

Evident Global I-REC Registry, APX TIGR Registry, and Powerledger

These three independent renewable energy registry developers—Evident Global I-REC Registry, APX TIGR Registry, and Powerledger—were recognized for the progress they’ve made in providing reliable renewable energy tracking across Asia. By issuing and tracking certificates, these systems are a crucial part of the infrastructure necessary for consumers and businesses throughout the region to buy, use, and claim the environmental benefits of clean energy. The Evident Global I-REC Registry is the most widely adopted energy attribute certificate registry in the world, with customers in more than 140 countries and over 100TWh of I-RECs for electricity issued per year. The APX Tradable Instruments for Global Renewables (TIGR) Registry is an online platform for issuing, tracking, managing and retiring Renewable Energy Certificates that enables transparent, secure, and reliable tracking of global RECs, backed by established quality standards. Powerledger is an Australian technology company that has developed a blockchain-enabled renewable energy trading platform that works alongside the infrastructure of existing energy systems, enabling greater control and ownership for consumers and producers alike. Together, these three platforms are also helping to educate and engage with local and national governments on pilot tracking systems, peer-to-peer REC trading, and national tracking to support renewable energy policies and voluntary market development.

Sabah Renewable Energy Rural Electrification Roadmap Consortium

Malaysia’s Sabah RE2 Roadmap Consortium is being recognized for its revolutionary approach to rural electrification planning on the island of Borneo. This initiative, led by Forever Sabah and launched in August 2021, leverages indigenous knowledge and deep understanding of local context with sophisticated modeling and policy recommendations to accelerate energy access for some of Malaysia’s most underserved communities. The consortium is focused on renewables as a viable solution for energy access for communities located far from the grid, with a goal of 200 renewable energy mini-grids across rural Sabah by 2030.

Singapore Standards Council, Enterprise Singapore

Leading a public-private partnership comprising experts from across the REC ecosystem in Singapore, Enterprise Singapore’s Singapore Standards Council developed Singapore Standard 673, the Code of Practice for Renewable Energy Certificates. SS673 is the first national standard of its kind in Southeast Asia, covering the production, tracking, management, and usage of RECs in making renewable energy claims in Singapore. The new standard is intended to provide a clear framework to improve the integrity of measurement, reporting, and verification requirements for the issuance and management of RECs, as well as defining the types of renewable energy sources that are eligible to generate RECs. This Standard will facilitate investment in renewable energy and support low-carbon electricity imports from regional power grids.
